In 2018, Sankofa.org joined artists, organizers, and cultural institutions across the country in support of the historic For Freedoms 50 State Initiative, the largest creative collaboration in American history.

The initiative brought together more than 250 partner organizations to host over 600 decentralized public events nationwide during the midterm election season. Through exhibitions, conversations, performances, workshops, and public art installations, the project created opportunities for communities to engage in meaningful dialogue about art, education, politics, and civic participation.

At the heart of the initiative was the belief that artistic expression can inspire civic engagement. Public artworks—including the now-iconic billboard campaign—invited audiences to reflect on the values, challenges, and possibilities facing the nation while encouraging participation in the democratic process.

The 50 State Initiative demonstrated the power of culture as a catalyst for conversation and collective action. By amplifying diverse voices and creating space for public engagement, the project helped reimagine what civic participation can look like in contemporary America.
