LYRICS FROM LOCKDOWN
Directed by Gina Belafonte, Lyrics From Lockdown is a groundbreaking multimedia performance that combines hip-hop, theater, spoken word poetry, rhythm and blues, calypso, and classical music to tell a deeply personal story of wrongful incarceration and racial injustice.
The production is based on the life of Bryonn Bain, an acclaimed educator, attorney, poet, and performer who was wrongfully imprisoned in New York City while studying law at Harvard University. Through a powerful one-man performance supported by live music and multimedia projections, Bain brings to life more than forty characters whose stories illuminate the human cost of mass incarceration and racial profiling.
Part memoir, part social commentary, and part call to action, Lyrics From Lockdown challenges audiences to confront the realities of a justice system that disproportionately impacts communities of color while celebrating the resilience and creativity of those who endure it.
The production has been performed for audiences across the country and remains a powerful example of how art can illuminate complex social issues, foster empathy, and inspire meaningful dialogue.
