As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Sankofa.org and Community Coalition (CoCo) invite the public to reconsider one of the nation’s most enduring questions: Who gets to tell the story of America?

WE, THE PEOPLE is a multidisciplinary exhibition, storytelling project, and cultural intervention that centers the voices, experiences, and creative expressions of Black, Indigenous, Brown, immigrant, LGBTQ+, femme, and historically marginalized communities. Rather than positioning these communities as footnotes in the American narrative, the exhibition recognizes them as authors of the nation’s past, present, and future.

Presented at LADC Studios in Los Angeles, the exhibition emerged at a pivotal moment in American history. While many commemorations of the nation’s semi-quincentennial focus on traditional narratives of American exceptionalism, WE, THE PEOPLE offers a more expansive and honest examination of democracy, belonging, identity, and civic participation.

Through visual art, storytelling, community engagement, and public dialogue, the project asks visitors to imagine a future in which all people are reflected in the story of America. The exhibition serves as both a celebration of cultural expression and a call to action—encouraging audiences to engage with the ongoing work of building a more just and inclusive society.
